SHREVEPORT – In reaction to a shocking video being released of a man trying to kidnap a woman at a local convenience store. A martial arts instructor is sharing self-defense tips.

“In a quick panic moment. Made an amazingly smart decision,” says Jason Wegener with Tiger- Rock Martial Arts. Wegener says it’s important to fight back and attempt to make a quick escape like the woman in the video.

“Where you are is safer than where you’re going. If you’re being pushed into a vehicle or in a vehicle and it hasn’t started moving yet. Obviously getting out of the vehicle whenever it’s stopped is important,” said Wegener.

Experts say once you’re taken from the initial scene you’re taken from the initial scene your chances of survival drop drastically.

The key for a self-defense move to work is it has to be something you’ve done more than a thousand times. Like this swim move.

“If you’ve been swimming you’ve already done that thousands of times. If someone is trying to grab you the first thing I want you to do is sit down because you already know how to sit down,” said Wegener.

Wegener says weapons are useful, but in the moment they aren’t the most effective.

“For a weapon to be useful it has to be in your hand that’s the reality,” said Wegener.

Police say it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings. “That young lady was going about her business and at the time she looked down and that’s when the attack happened,” Shreveport Police Detective Melvin Smith.

And they say at the end of the day if you have to. “Just fight,” said Smith.
