TUCSON, Ariz. – Earlier this week KGUN9 told you about two assaults near the University of Arizona. One victim said it was a natural instinct to fight back when she was attacked, thanks to taking self defense classes.

It’s a scary situation no one wants to think about being in. But do you know what to do if someone attacks you from behind? A University of Arizona student believes her ability to fight back when she was attacked near campus saved her life.

A few years ago, Lindsey Bettcher had an altercation and didn’t know how to defend herself. Now, she teaches a free self defense class for women every Friday atTucson Krav Maga.

“You never know if something’s going to happen,” Bettcher said. “Like for me, I trusted the person, I knew them so well. And the situation just for some reason got out of hand, and you need to know how to fight back.”

Bettcher’s class is open to women of all ages, and any disabilities or injuries can be worked around.

The women who take the class are learning more than just how to fight back — they’re learning confidence.

“A lot of it is mental,” Bettcher said. “I invite people to come all the time and they’re like, ‘I don’t want to get hurt, and I don’t think I can do this.’ But as soon as they do come in, they realize the setting that we have here, it’s fun. We encourage people, we empower people.”
