TOLEDO, Ohio (WNWO) – With school back in session, many students will be walking to and from buses, activities, and around their college campus. It’s important to be aware and knowledgeable on how to defend yourself if a problem arises.

14-year-old, Ashley Sepulveda started practicing martial arts eight years ago.

“I was getting bullied a lot in school,” said Ashley Sepulveda, a martial arts student.

As for Kaylyn Hornbeak, she’s been a martial arts student for a decade.

“It made me feel confident in myself,” said Kaylyn Hornbeak.

Today, these two are international champions in martial arts.

“You don’t have to do the biggest things or be the stronger, more aggressive person,” said Sepulveda.

NBC 24 decided to learn from these two at Allen’s American Martial Arts. Brandon Allen, an instructor in martial arts, said there are some key factors before any physical training begins.

“Being prepared and being aware are the two biggest things,” said Brandon Allen, with Allen’s American Martial Arts.

Allen also identified the difference between self-defense and combat.

“Self-defense is about getting out and escaping a situation safely,” said Allen. “Fighting is trying to stay.”

After learning the importance of a clear mind, the physical part begins. The three went through a series of escapes including: wrist grabs, chokes, and bear hugs.

Through each escape, it’s important to keep calm and focus on your next steps. Allen also stressed the importance of balance, and using it against someone who may be larger or stronger than you.
